Having lived in (loved living in) both cities - here are a few thoughts I have found both cities to have vibrant and diverse gay communities that are generally very friendly but it does take some effort to make new friends but NYC is slightly easier because distances are much shorter and rarely involve driving, and I think NYC has a larger transient population, so I think more people are.
